MORE COLORS THAN THE EYE CAN SEE
An Education Initiative
inspired by the Art of Jeffrey Gibson

MORE COLORS THAN THE EYE CAN SEE transforms how Native American art and cultures are taught nationwide with new, free resources for K–12 educators. Established in 2024, the project is a key component of artist Jeffrey Gibson’s vision for the space in which to place me, his solo exhibition for the U.S. Pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale, commissioned by Portland Art Museum (PAM) and SITE Santa Fe (SITE). Led by PAM and SITE, in collaboration with Gibson and the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI), a cohort of ten educators participated in a multiyear program that generated 14 new arts, culture, and interdisciplinary lessons, now freely available to educators here and on the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American Indian Native Knowledge 360° (NK360°) digital platform.
Seven art lessons and activities comprise MORE COLORS THAN THE EYE CAN SEE: The Art of Jeffrey Gibson, the first in a new Native Knowledge 360° series titled Artist Spotlight, which launched in March 2026 with Gibson's feature. Seven companion lessons available as PDFs are available here, and they further explore Gibson's work through contemporary art as well as interdisciplinary connections, including math, history, and social studies. Taken together, these lessons fill a critical gap in resources for educators and students and situate Indigenous art within a broad U.S. and global context—an approach that recognizes art as a powerful tool for countering stereotypes and affirming the presence and vitality of Native cultures.

Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, Native Knowledge 360° Artist Spotlight: The Art of Jeffrey Gibson, is the result of a unique collaboration between the National Museum of the American Indian, Jeffrey Gibson, the Portland Art Museum, SITE Santa Fe, and the Jeffrey Gibson Venice Biennale Educator Cohort. The cohort of ten educators from Oregon and New Mexico, all with expertise and experience in teaching Indigenous art and cultures, created the K–12 lesson plans as well as the Sources of Influence.
